An icon from the past

4 minute read

The Hyundai Pony Coupe concept was designed by an Italian designer, Goigetto Giugiaro to be conceptually pure and timeless. It has become an icon for the brand since its first appearance at the 1974 Turin Motor Show for its design, which emphasizes the use of Origami-like geometric lines that create a distinctive visual impact.

Its wedge-style nose and circular headlamps were some features that set it apart from the crowd in the competitive global market and were even a huge source of inspiration for the legendary De Lorean DMC 12.

The Pony will always maintain its unique presence: an icon. It propelled Hyundai onto the global stage and kick-started the Korean car industry. 45 years later, Hyundai is now one of the top automotive brands in the world.

Spirit of challenge

Pony Coupe was a concept car that targeted global markets. Although it did not lead to mass-production, it is meaningful as a concept car that clearly demonstrates Hyundai Motor's spirit of challenge.

A conversation with
Giorgetto Giugiaro

"I designed the Hyundai Pony when I was still a young designer at the start of my career. I was tasked with creating a technically valid concept car targeting the middle class. I felt very proud that I was in charge of creating a production vehicle for a country that was about to face a fiercely competitive market."

This car had to make people dream.

"Today, Hyundai is in an unimaginable position. The brand has overcome the doubts of skeptics who didn’t believe that it could have a chance of success. All thanks to the desire and determination of the man I met in Korea."

"The brand has succeeded in reaching the same level of other major European brands, and I think it is down to a great product."
